I would like to summarize my notes on what I’ve learned at the ” San Francisco An Event Apart” conference. This was my first “An Event Apart” and I must say that I really appreciated it. I think that every designer, content people, CEO, entrepreneurs, and others should attend this conference at least.
Content is king
I quickly came to realize that it’s a confusing sentence as it requires a total change of mentality in any organization. It requires to have the content fully ready before the design. Otherwise the “content becomes a design problem”. However, in most project, either the content is created as the project goes or even better, added midway through. This often forces you to check your design.
Think about the user first
Design that does not serve people does not serve business
Browsing an airport website, your main intention would be mainly to find arrivals time, departure time, parking spots, and direction. If that content wasn’t available straight from the beginning, you certainly would not be coming back to it and get frustrated. Therefore, we need give the users what they need.
Mobile First
Luke Wroblewski author of Mobile First talks about the philosophy of having your content and your design made for mobile as your main target. The use of mobile forces you to display the user the most important content. That same content should not be hidden on a desktop experience as it’s still the same important information.
Luke suggest that all websites should be gesture friendly. Microsoft new tablet Surface can be either a tablet or a computer, and surprisingly enough, people will use it more as a tablet. If your website is already gesture friendly, the user experience will be better.
Don’t make the user feel stupid
Make design toddler friendly. If a toddler can easily understand how your website works, then the experience will much appreciated by your customer. Let the people be lazy and make it easy for them. Amazon is a perfect example of that as they have a system that allows you to buy with one click. It’s a very easy and lazy process.
In the end, you website project should start with the content you have and for mobile. Making your website gesture friendly will make your website adaptable to any future devices. Keeping it simple will make your website faster and easier to understand.
